The Frank Sargeant Expo is one of the most anticipated shows in Tampa Bay each year. This was my first show and I was not disappointed. The boat dealers brought out all sorts of boats from custom gheenoes to fully rigged offshore center consoles. It was also good to see the other vendors that make up the fishing industry… major rod manufacturers, clothing companies, tackle suppliers, etc.

Over time, I’ve decided that an artist is anyone who is proficient at a specific task, possesses the eye to see minute details that only the experienced would recognize, innovative enough to just try new things, and is willing to share their own wisdom with others. That really means that I admire someone who has the dedication to master their craft, take it to new heights, and share that information with others so that they may also do their part to take the craft further.
This past weekend, I went to a gathering of fishing rod artists: The International Custom Rod Building Expo in High Point, North Carolina. I’ve been building rods now for bout three years under the guidance of Jim Gamble (www.dudleyrods.com). He convinced me to accompany him to the show. Unfortunately, Jim’s flight was canceled all the while I’m already sitting around my hotel room at the Best Western High Point. For months, I had been so excited to goto the show with Jim so I could meet everyone he knew. I was pretty disappointed to hear that he wasn’t coming anymore. None the less, he still gave me a list of people to meet and greet.
